Few manufacturers have built as many timeless cars as Mercedes-Benz. Over the decades, the brand has combined engineering, comfort and quiet confidence in a way that collectors around the world continue to admire. Our showroom in Dubai is home to several classic Mercedes-Benz models that tell that story beautifully. Here is a closer look at some of them.
Mercedes-Benz 300 Cabriolet D "Adenauer"
The 300 series of the 1950s was the flagship of post-war Mercedes-Benz, a car for heads of state and industrialists. It earned its nickname from German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, who used these cars during his years in office. The four-door Cabriolet D was the most exclusive body style, built in small numbers with a folding fabric roof that turns a stately saloon into an open-air grand tourer. With its tall chrome grille and graceful lines, it is one of the most elegant Mercedes-Benz cars ever made.
Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5
The W111 coupés and cabriolets of the 1960s and early 1970s are often called some of the most beautiful cars Mercedes-Benz ever produced. The 280 SE 3.5, introduced at the end of the model's life, paired that hand-finished body with a then-new 3.5-litre V8, giving effortless performance to match its looks. Its low roofline, generous chrome and refined proportions make it a favourite with collectors today.
Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9
When it arrived in the mid-1970s, the 450 SEL 6.9 was the ultimate luxury saloon. Under the bonnet sat a 6.9-litre V8, one of the largest engines fitted to a post-war production car at the time. It was paired with hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension that gave it a remarkably smooth ride. Fewer than 7,500 were built, and today it is recognised as one of the great performance saloons of its era.
Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC
The C126 S-Class coupé of the 1980s brought pillarless styling, cutting-edge safety technology and V8 power together in one sleek package. The 560 SEC was the top of the range, with a 5.6-litre V8 and a level of comfort and quality that defined Mercedes-Benz in that decade. It remains a superb car to drive and a standout example of 1980s design.
Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II
The 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II is one of the most celebrated modern classics of all. It was built in 1990 as a homologation special, so that Mercedes-Benz could race the car in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM). Only 502 were made, each with dramatic bodywork and a large adjustable rear wing, plus a high-revving 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. Its motorsport pedigree and rarity have made it one of the most sought-after Mercedes-Benz models among collectors.
Why these cars endure
What unites these very different cars is a commitment to quality that has stood the test of time:
Engineering designed to last, with many examples still covering the miles today.
Design that ages gracefully, from 1950s chrome to 1980s minimalism.
Comfort and refinement that still feel special decades later.
Strong support from specialists and the manufacturer's own heritage programmes.
