Owning a classic car is one of the most rewarding ways to enjoy motoring. In Dubai, where car culture runs deep and the roads are made for weekend drives, interest in collector cars has never been higher. But a classic is not bought like a new car. Every example has its own story, and the difference between a great purchase and an expensive lesson usually comes down to preparation. This guide walks you through the steps that matter most.
Start with the car you really want
Before looking at listings, be honest about how you will use the car. A weekend cruiser, a show car and a long-term collectible each call for different choices.
- For regular driving, models with good parts availability and comfortable air conditioning make life easier in the UAE climate.
- For shows and concours events, originality and condition matter above everything else.
- For a long-term collection, rarity, provenance and desirability carry more weight.
Knowing your goal narrows the search and keeps you focused when an attractive car turns up that does not actually fit your plans.
Set a realistic budget
The purchase price is only part of the cost of ownership. Plan for the extras from day one:
- Inspection and paperwork before you buy.
- Insurance, ideally an agreed-value policy designed for classic cars.
- Storage in a shaded, preferably climate-controlled space.
- Maintenance by a specialist who knows the model.
- A reserve for the unexpected: older cars occasionally need parts that take time to source.
A sensible rule is to keep a portion of your budget aside for the first year of ownership, so you can sort any small issues without stress.
Research the model in depth
Every classic has its known strengths and weak points. Some engines are famously robust; some bodies are prone to corrosion in particular places; some trim parts are almost impossible to find. Owners' clubs, marque specialists and model histories are invaluable here. The more you know, the easier it is to judge whether a car is priced fairly and to spot when something is not quite right.
Check the history and documentation
With collector cars, paperwork is part of the value. Ask for:
- Service records and invoices that show how the car has been maintained.
- Ownership history, especially for rare or high-value models.
- Restoration records and photographs, if the car has been restored.
- Factory documentation where available, such as build sheets or certificates from the manufacturer's heritage department.
A car with a clear, consistent history is easier to enjoy, easier to insure and easier to sell later.
Matching numbers and originality
For many models, a car that still has its original engine, gearbox and key components is worth noticeably more. Ask whether the numbers match and how much of the car is original. Restored cars can be excellent, but the quality of the restoration matters, so ask who did the work and how it was documented.
Inspect before you commit
Even if a car looks perfect in photos, have it inspected in person by someone who knows the model. A thorough inspection covers the bodywork and underside for corrosion or previous repairs, paint depth, the engine and gearbox, suspension, brakes, electrics and the condition of rubber seals and hoses, which age quickly in the heat. A test drive tells you how the car starts, idles, shifts and stops, and whether the air conditioning copes with a Dubai afternoon.
Registration, import and insurance
If the car is already registered in the UAE, the transfer is straightforward. If you are importing a car, factor in shipping, customs duty and the inspection and registration process with the authorities, and check the current requirements before you commit, as rules can change. For insurance, look for a policy that understands collector cars: an agreed-value policy means the car is covered for a value agreed at the start, rather than a depreciated market figure.
Buy from someone you trust
Buying from an established specialist gives you more than a car. It gives you access to the car's background, honest advice on its condition and someone to call after the sale. At Star Collection we present every car with as much history as we can, and we are always happy to talk through a car in detail before you decide.
