Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II No. 317 of 500 is one of only 500 examples produced as a road-legal homologation special for Mercedes-Benz’s DTM racing program. Finished in Black, the exterior features the distinctive Evolution II aerodynamic, large rear wing, front splitter, widened wheel arches, 17-inch Evo alloy wheels and lowered stance. The interior is finished in Black leather with sport seats, a leather steering wheel, sport instrumentation and Evo II-specific trim. Power comes from a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-4, 16-valve engine producing approximately 235 hp, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, while the hydraulic suspension system allows adjustment of the ride height.
The Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II was developed during the intense DTM rivalry of the late 1980s, when Mercedes-Benz was competing directly against the BMW E30 M3. Following the introduction of the Evolution I in 1989, Mercedes-Benz developed the Evolution II as a more advanced homologation special, with extensive aerodynamic and chassis development carried out specifically with motorsport in mind. Unveiled in 1990, the Evo II was limited to just 500 road-going examples, with the final production figure commonly cited as 502 units. It featured a Cosworth-developed 2.5-liter 16-valve engine producing 235 hp, a highly developed aerodynamic package with adjustable spoilers and its distinctive large rear wing, wider bodywork and a cockpit-adjustable hydraulic suspension system. The Evolution II later became closely associated with Mercedes-Benz’s successful DTM program, culminating in a dominant 1992 season and establishing the Evo II as one of the most iconic homologation cars of its era.
